Prevention and early detection go hand-in-hand when it comes to your health. We’re always learning more about how important lifestyle choices can be. For instance, alcohol can change the way a woman’s body metabolizes estrogen; higher estrogen levels may increase the risk of breast cancer. Make smart choices to help you live the healthiest life possible, and reduce your breast cancer risk.
Limit your alcohol consumption. New studies suggest that alcohol can increase your risk of breast cancer. Not drinking at all is best, but if you do drink, limit your consumption to no more than one drink per day.
Avoid tobacco. You likely already know how damaging smoking can be to your lungs and heart. Did you also know that smoking is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer in women? If you currently use tobacco in any form—smoking, vaping, or chewing—seek help to quit. Also avoid heavy second-hand exposure.
Stay fit, and at a healthy weight. Diet and exercise can be a powerful combination in helping to combat many diseases, including lowering your breast cancer risk. Studies have shown that women’s breast cancer risk is increased with obesity, especially after menopause. On the other hand, staying at a healthy weight can add some protection. Aim for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and limited in processed meats and foods. Aim for 75-150 minutes of vigorous activity, or 150-300 minutes of moderate activity every week.
Get regular checkups and screenings. Regular checkups and mammograms are one of the easiest things you can do to safeguard your health. These important screenings won’t prevent breast cancer, but they can help you find it earlier, when it’s most treatable.
1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer. At John Muir Health, we offer 3D mammograms, which provide earlier and more accurate detection than 2D mammograms, especially for women with dense breast tissue. Mammograms need to be ordered by a primary care provider or an OB/GYN. Let’s talk about the screening schedule that’s right for you.
