A direct address is a technical standard for exchanging health information between health care entities (e.g. primary care physicians, specialists, hospitals, clinical labs) in a trusted network. It is secure, easy-to-use, and approved for use by nationally-recognized experts, regulators, and organizations. Regulators, including the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), strongly encourage providers to acquire a direct address and to input their direct address within the NPPES.
In fact, CMS has indicated that it will publicly report the names and NPIs of individual providers who do not have digital contact information included in the NPPES system and has further suggested that the regulator plans to implement additional enforcement mechanisms in future rulemaking to encourage providers to acquire and use their direct address.
