Student Programs

John Muir Health offers a range of student opportunities for young people interested in pursuing careers in healthcare. The programs included below are focused on diverse populations and are geared towards encouraging under-represented students to consider healthcare career pathways.

High School Programs

Young Healers High School Internship Program (Every spring and summer)

Description

  • In partnership with Junior Achievement of Northern California, John Muir Health offers a spring and summer learning opportunity for High School Seniors to explore healthcare careers. 

  • Students are matched with various John Muir Health mentors and complete a 6-week (spring) or 2-week (summer) internship at a John Muir Health facility. 

  • The internship offers job shadowing, career exploration, networking, and workforce readiness.

Eligibility

  • High School Seniors

  • Minimum 2.5 GPA 

  • Interested in the Health Care Industry

  • Attend a school with a Health Pathway in Contra Costa County

  • School Districts include Antioch Unified, Brentwood Union, Mt. Diablo Unified, Pittsburg Unified, Martinez Unified, West County Unified

  • Comply with John Muir Health screening requirements

Young Healers Workshops: One-time workshops and speaker series offered by Junior Achievement of Northern California events in collaboration with guest speakers from John Muir Health representing physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.   

 

CLIMB Near Peer Mentorship Program: (Year-long mentorship program) 

Description 

  • This program aims to develop family medicine learners into community-engaged family medicine providers who practice quality medicine with compassion. 

  • This is a multi-level mentorship program beginning with high school and ends with residency. 

  • July through December

  • Meet (virtually) with medical students weekly 

  • September through December

  • Mentor High School students (virtually) who are interested in medicine

  • High School, Undergraduate College Students, and Medical Students are eligible to apply

“I Belong” Scholarship

Description

  • Thirty (30) students are awarded this John Muir Health scholarship annually, to support diverse students to pursue careers in healthcare.

  • Scholarships are awarded to select High School seniors  

  • Applications are open every September 

Eligibility 

  • Students must demonstrate diversity qualifications they bring to the healthcare setting

  • Students must be interested in a career in healthcare  

  • Student must plan to attend a trade school, junior college, or a four-year university

  • Students must have a 2.5 GPA or above

  • Students must be a High School senior from an eligible High School (schools vary each year 

  • Students need two current letters of recommendation from a counselor, teacher, coach, or adult supervisor, a high school transcript, and to complete an essay question.

Cristo Rey De La Salle Work-Study Program: (Full-time, year-round study)

Description

  • Offers four students a school-year-long work-based opportunity at John Muir Health. 

  • Each student is selected and matched by Cristo Rey.  

  • Each Cristo Rey student takes a full course load of college preparatory coursework for four years, while participating one day each week in a four-year Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) to fund most tuition costs.

High School Volunteer Program

Description 

Eligibility

  • We require students to be at least 14.5 years old, second semester freshmen. 

  • Students must have a grade point average of 3.0

College Programs

Health Career Connection Internship (full time, 10-week summer internship) 

Description

  • Health Career Connections provides opportunity and support to people of all backgrounds and has priority on college students from backgrounds underrepresented in the health professions, first-generation college students, and people from low-income backgrounds and underserved communities.

  • The program inspires and empowers interns and alumni with real world exposure, experience, mentoring, and networking.  

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate student or recent college graduate 

  • Background in public health disciplines (includes but not limited to: Nutrition, Health Management, Health education, Health policy and advocacy, Community Health) 

  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to healthcare, public health, primary care, behavioral health, and/or life science careers  

  • Ability to work 10 consecutive weeks, full time (40 hours per week) primarily during typical business hours, during the internship 

  • Leadership and initiative (experience in student organizations, clubs, etc.).

Master of Public Health Summer Practicum

Description

  • Summer Practicum opportunities are available to Master of Public Health Students from UC Berkeley

  • Students are linked with a department within the sphere of public health to include Community Health Improvement, Belonging and Equity or other related field 

  • Students are paid a stipend and complete a 10-week, full-time summer internship, equivalent to 400 hours of practicum experience.
