Support Provides Much-Needed Assistance through Distribution of Fruits and Vegetables
Walnut Creek, Calif. (December 18, 2018) – In support of a partnership that has spanned 10 years, John Muir Health is making a holiday contribution of $35,000 to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. The funding will support the Food Bank's Community Produce Program, which distributes fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 50 sites throughout Contra Costa and Solano counties twice a month.
“The idea for this partnership came from a John Muir Health employee. It has become an important tradition for our team of physicians, nurses, clinical and support staff and volunteers, and to the community,” said Cal Knight, president and CEO of John Muir Health. “We know there is a direct relationship between health and nutrition. We see the effects of food insecurity every day in patients living with Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and obesity. We appreciate the outstanding work of the Food Bank and are proud to support a program that is consistent with our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve with quality and compassion.”
“We’re thankful to John Muir Health for their support of our Community Produce Program and 10-year partnership,” said Larry Sly, executive director of the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano. “By working in tandem, we’ve been able to provide nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables to even more people in need. We believe healthy neighbors create strong communities.”
Since 2008, John Muir Health has made a holiday contribution to help feed local families in need. The Community Produce Program started in 2012 with a grant from the John Muir Health-supported John Muir Health Community Health Fund.
