Walnut Creek medical center ranks in Top 50 nationally for Gynecology. Concord was one of only 29 hospitals nationwide (less than 1%) to receive a high performing rating in all nine procedures and conditions evaluated. Concord and Walnut Creek medical centers ranked in the Top 3 in S.F. Metro Area and Top 14 in California.

Walnut Creek, Calif. (August 14, 2018) – John Muir Health’s Concord and Walnut Creek medical centers earned the designation of Best Regional Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report in its annual list of America's Best Hospitals.

To earn this distinction, each medical center had to earn at least one national ranking in a specialty or at least three ratings of “high performing” across 12 specialties and nine procedures and conditions. For the 12th consecutive year, John Muir Health’s Walnut Creek medical center had a service nationally ranked. For the second straight year, Concord was one of only 29 hospitals nationwide (less than 1%) to receive a high performing rating in all nine procedures and conditions evaluated. Combined, the Concord and Walnut Creek medical centers had 13 specialties nationally ranked or rated as high performing and 15 procedures and conditions rated as high performing. This places both medical centers among the top ranked in the San Francisco Metro Area and the state.

The Walnut Creek medical center has been nationally ranked in Gynecology for the past seven years. It was one of just 158 medical centers – less than 4 percent of the 4,500 analyzed – to be nationally ranked in even one of 12 specialties surveyed for the report.

The Walnut Creek medical center was also ranked as high-performing in Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology. In addition, the Walnut Creek medical center was rated as high performing in several adult procedures and conditions, including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Colon Cancer Surgery, Heart Failure, Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement and Lung Cancer Surgery.

The Concord medical center was ranked as high-performing in six specialties, including Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology. In addition, the Concord medical center was rated as high performing in all nine adult procedures and conditions, including Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair, Aortic Valve Surgery, COPD, Colon Cancer Surgery, Heart Bypass Surgery, Heart Failure, Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement and Lung Cancer Surgery.

Along with its national rankings, U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals published state and metropolitan hospital rankings. John Muir Health’s Concord medical center is listed at #2 out of 48 hospitals in the San Francisco Metro Area and #12 out of more than 400 acute care hospitals in California. The Walnut Creek medical center is listed at #3 locally and #14 in the state.

“Our outstanding team of physicians, nurses, clinical and support services staff, and volunteers is focused every day on quality, safety and the patient experience, which is why we're proud to be ranked among the region, state and nation’s best by U.S. News for the care we provide again this year,” said Jane Willemsen, Executive Vice President and President, Hospital Operations at John Muir Health. “As recognized by U.S. News, our medical centers are able to provide a range of high-quality services. These services are not usually offered by community hospitals, but they allow patients to stay close to home for their care, which is a tremendous benefit in the healing process.”

“Our mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve with quality and compassion,” said Irving Pike, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at John Muir Health. “We've set the bar high and these rankings should give patients confidence that they will receive a high level of patient-centered and compassionate care from experts in their field.”

Between the two medical centers, John Muir Health has 799 licensed beds. The Walnut Creek Medical Center also serves as the designated trauma center for Contra Costa County. In addition, the health system offers a network of more than 1,000 primary care and specialty physicians to care for patients.
