Nancy's Cancer Journey

As a fellow patient of John Muir Health, I am compelled to share my story with you—a tale of resilience, kindness, and the unwavering support of our health care heroes. In reflecting on my journey, I’ve come to understand the vital role that compassionate health care plays in our lives, shaping our experiences and guiding us through the most challenging of times.

In 1997, I was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. It was a daunting time filled with uncertainty and fear. However, thanks to the remarkable care provided by my medical team, I underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and a mastectomy, eventually entering remission. For 25 years, I lived my life to the fullest, cherishing each moment of health and vitality.

But life has a way of throwing unexpected challenges our way. Last year, during a routine mammogram at John Muir Health, my world was once again turned upside down. An abnormal result led to a biopsy, and just two days before Thanksgiving, I received the frightening news: Cancer had returned. This time, however, it was caught early, a type known as ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).

In the face of fear and uncertainty, I found solace in the swift action and unwavering support of the health care team at John Muir Health. Within weeks, I was scheduled to meet with Dr. Tiffany Svahn and the team at the Multi-Disciplinary Breast Cancer Program. Their efficiency was matched only by their compassion and expertise.

I vividly remember sitting in Dr. Svahn’s office as they outlined a treatment plan tailored to my specific needs. Despite the complexity of my case, they instilled in me a sense of confidence and reassurance. The plan, which included surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy, gave me confidence for the future.

What struck me most was not just their medical expertise but also their genuine care and empathy in how they treated me. Dr. Svahn took the time to listen to my concerns, answering my questions with patience and understanding. In those moments, I felt seen, heard, and supported.
