Learn to think FAST and take immediate action
When someone suffers a stroke, time is of the utmost importance. Learn to recognize some of the many warning signs of a stroke and call 9-1-1 when you see them.
F= Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of his or her face droop?
A= Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
S = Speech. Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is his or her speech slurred or strange?
T= Time. If you observe any of these signs, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Also, note the time when the symptoms first appeared. An FDA-approved clot-buster medication for a stroke may reduce long-term disability if given within three hours of the first symptom.
