John Muir Health’s team of gynecological oncologists has several years of combined experience diagnosing and staging gynecological cancers.

Our goal is to quickly make an accurate diagnosis so we can begin treatment immediately.

What the suspected cancer is will determine which diagnostic tools we need to use to make an accurate diagnosis.

Imaging Tests – Sophisticated, non-invasive imaging tools like computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, or ultrasound are often used to detect if a solid mass is present and has spread to other sites.

Biopsy Procedures – Biopsies, in which a sample of tissue is removed and evaluated, are often used to confirm if a gynecological cancer is present. For ovarian cancer, the biopsy is most commonly performed after removing the tumor during surgery.

For suspected endometrial cancer, which is the most common gynecological cancer, the minimally invasive biopsy procedure involves inserting a flexible tube into the uterus through the cervix in order to sample uterine tissue.
