Sub-Internship

Participation in our fourth year Sub-Internships provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about the practice of family medicine at John Muir Health Family Medicine Residency Program. Each rotation consists of a four-week block during which you will work with experienced and enthusiastic physicians in the ambulatory or inpatient settings.

We offer three Sub-Internships per block: two in our family medicine clinic and one inpatient sub-internship at John Muir Medical Center in Concord.

We offer two exceptional sub-internship experiences:

Team Based Care

This four-week ambulatory sub-internship allows medical students to become full members of our inter-professional team. Students will see a panel of patients, make pre-visit and post-visit assessments, consult and provide collaborative care with other members of the team, as well as participate in faculty-lead workshops. Our Family Medicine Residency Practice uses “The 10 Building Blocks of High Performance Primary Care” to frame the medical student’s experience, and provides sub-internship mentors and coaches to ensure a positive and valuable educational experience.

Inpatient Medicine Sub-Internship

This four-week sub-internship focuses on inpatient and transitional care management of hospitalized patients. Students will act as the primary caretaker of their patients following them from admission through their hospitalization as well as an emphasis on the discharge process. The rotation will occur at John Muir Medical Center, Concord campus and does include a standard six-day week with weekend rounding responsibilities. Similar to our residents' schedules, sub-interns will also see patients in the family medicine residency clinic on Thursday mornings. The sub-internship is taught and supervised by highly experienced internal medicine and family medicine faculty. Students will be given ample opportunity to manage acute care conditions in a supportive and highly effective hospital system.

There was a lot of independence which gave me the opportunity to     interact with different teams and specialists in the hospital. I liked the ability to see the patient on my own,     present the patient to the attending and get feedback on my plan. You get a diverse patient population to     learn from. Everyone is eager to teach and there is a focus on the patient's whole health. There's a ton of     learning opportunities and you might find yourself learning without knowing it!"

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for one of our Sub-Internships

  • Applicant must be currently enrolled in a LCME or AOA accredited US or Canadian medical school
  • Have successfully completed USMLE or COMLEX Step 1 with a passing score
  • Have completed most of the third-year core rotations in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Ob-Gyn and Psychiatry/Behavioral Medicine
  • Provide proof of current immunizations
  • Provide completed Sub-Internship Application
  • Submit Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Scholarship Opportunities

Educational Stipend 

We are pleased to be able to offer each Sub-Intern a stipend of $3,000 for their four-week rotation.  

Additional Scholarship Opportunities 

If selected to complete a rotation with John Muir Health, the following scholarships are also available, each offering up to an additional $2000: 

 1. Quality Improvement and Academic Medicine Scholarship*:  

At John Muir Health FMRP, we encourage our residents to innovate and pursue their clinical passions. This scholarship is intended to support medical students who wish to research a clinical area of interest while rotating with us. To apply for this scholarship, please submit a brief one-to-two-page quality improvement or clinical research project proposal (see attached template). After your submission, your proposal will be reviewed by faculty, and upon receipt of the scholarship, you will be matched with a faculty mentor with similar subject interests. 

 2. Mulvaney Community Health Scholarship*:  

Please submit a concise, one-to-two-page, community medicine project proposal (see attached template) that you will complete and present at the end of your sub-internship. It is not required to work with our residency community partners, but you can click HERE to learn about where our residents go to during their Vulnerable Population Health rotations. After your submission, your proposal will be reviewed by our faculty leads in vulnerable population health and our community health partners (JMH is a nonprofit system).  

 *Project-oriented scholarships: In cases where a similar project has been recently conducted, we may ask to work with you to develop an alternate project proposal. 

 3. URiM Scholarship:

To be considered for one of our Under-Represented in Medicine (URiM) Scholarships you must self-identify as being part of one of the following underrepresented groups in medicine: racial or ethnic minority, LGBTQ+, disability, low socioeconomic status, or first-generation to college. Please write a 1-page essay that describes your experiences in community medicine and health equity, how they relate to your long term-career goals, and how you plan to use your experience to improve the health of your patients and community.
