The patient must have a cognitive concern or diagnosis.
If concern is primarily psychiatric without concern for underlying cognitive deficit the patient should be referred to for mental health/behavioral health services such as psychiatry or psychotherapy.
If the individual has a comorbid psychiatric diagnosis and concern for cognitive deficit, it is best if the psychiatric condition is well controlled and medications are stable.
